Yes. Implant-grade titanium is made to survive the inside of a human body, and a steam autoclave cycle is mild by comparison. The base metal is not the question. The details that trip up studios are everything attached to it, the state of the jewelry going in, and the process around the machine. This guide covers all three.
Sterilization practice is governed by your local health authority and, for many studios, by the guidelines of the Association of Professional Piercers. Nothing here replaces those. It is a practical guide to the jewelry side of the process.
What the autoclave does to titanium
A standard steam cycle runs at roughly 121°C to 134°C (250°F to 273°F) under pressure for a set exposure time, followed by a drying phase. ASTM F136 titanium is unaffected by those conditions. It does not corrode, soften, discolour or release anything. Polished surfaces stay polished. Threads stay true. Jewelry can be cycled many times over its life.
The same is true of commercially pure titanium (ASTM F67) and of niobium. Where studios run into trouble is with jewelry that is titanium in name only, or with non-titanium components on a titanium base.
Components to check before the first cycle

Preparing jewelry for the cycle
An autoclave sterilizes. It does not clean. Jewelry that goes in with machining oil, polishing compound, skin oils or packaging residue comes out sterile and dirty, and the residue can bake on. The steps that matter:
- Inspect and count. Look for tooling marks, burrs and damaged threads. Anything that fails inspection should not be sterilized; it should be returned.
- Clean. Ultrasonic cleaning in a heated bath with a suitable solution, using a machine reserved for jewelry, removes oils and particulate. Rinse and dry fully before pouching. Wet jewelry in a pouch can leave the pouch damp after the cycle, which compromises the seal.
- Separate components. Sterilize posts and ends unassembled where practical. Assembled threaded jewelry traps moisture in the threads, and press fit tops seated in posts shield the pin. Loose components also let you build a pair at the counter without breaking two pouches.
- Pouch and label. Use self-sealing sterilization pouches with internal and external indicators. Label with contents, date and load number.
- Load without crowding. Pouches paper side up, not stacked flat, so steam reaches every surface and the drying phase works.
Running and documenting the cycle
- Use the pouched cycle. Pouched loads need a longer exposure than unwrapped instruments. Our own process runs a 30-minute pouched cycle at 275°F and 200 kPa in a Ritter M9 with distilled water; your machine's manufacturer sets the parameters for yours.
- Include a chemical indicator in the load. A Class 5 integrating indicator in each load confirms time, temperature and steam were all reached, beyond what the pouch stripe shows.
- Run the full dry cycle. Damp pouches are not considered sterile and wick contamination through the paper.
- Log every load. Date, cycle, contents, indicator result, operator. Health inspectors ask for this, and it is what turns "we sterilize" into evidence.
- Spore test on schedule. Biological indicators, sent to a lab, are the only test that proves the machine actually kills. Weekly is common practice; follow your local requirement. Keep the results with the log.
Storage after sterilization
A sealed, dry, intact pouch keeps jewelry sterile until it is opened. Store pouches flat in a closed, clean container away from moisture and handling. Any pouch that is torn, wet, or has a failed indicator goes back through the process. Check the pouch manufacturer's guidance on shelf life and mark a re-process date if your health authority requires one.
In-house sterilization versus buying pre-sterilized
Both are legitimate, and many studios do both. The trade-off is time and documentation.
- In-house gives you control over every load and lets you sterilize whatever combination a client picks. It costs staff time for cleaning, pouching, logging and spore testing, and autoclave capacity that is often needed for instruments.
- Pre-sterilized from the supplier arrives pouched, indicator-marked and logged, ready for the drawer. It works best for your core initial-piercing stock: plain labret posts, ends and rings in the sizes you use every day. The supplier's process should be documented and spore tested, and you should be able to see that documentation.
