Threadless vs Threaded Body Jewelry: A Stocking Guide for Piercing Studios

Every studio ends up with an opinion on threadless versus threaded. Some standardize on one system to keep inventory simple. Most run both, because each has situations where it is clearly the better tool. This guide lays out the practical differences, where each system wins, and how to stock both without carrying twice the jewelry.

Everything below assumes implant-grade material. Connection type matters, but it never overrides the basics: ASTM F136 titanium, a polished surface, and proper sizing for the anatomy.

How each system works

Threadless (press fit)

A threadless top has a short solid pin on its back. The pin is bent very slightly, then pushed into the hollow post. The bend creates tension against the inside wall of the post, and that tension is what holds the top in place. There are no threads on either part.

The word "threadless" is used generically in the industry, but it is also a trademark of NeoMetal, the company that popularized the system. "Press fit" is the neutral term, and it is what we use on our press fit collection.

Internally threaded

An internally threaded post is smooth on the outside and has a threaded hole in the end. The top carries a small threaded pin that screws into the post. Because the threads live inside the post, the surface that passes through tissue is smooth. This is the system the Association of Professional Piercers has long recommended over externally threaded jewelry for initial piercings, and it is the only threaded style we stock. Where threadless wins

  • Fast changes at the counter. Swapping an end takes seconds and needs no tools. For studios that sell a lot of decorative tops on existing piercings, this is the main reason to stock press fit.
  • Small gauges. At 18g and 20g there is very little material for threads. Press fit pins hold well at these sizes, which is why nostril and ear tops are dominated by threadless.
  • Tops with no room for threads. Very small flat discs, tiny gems and chain-drape ends are easier to manufacture well as press fit.
  • Mixing brands. Press fit pins from different manufacturers are generally cross-compatible in the common gauges, so a studio can run tops from more than one supplier on the same posts. Always test a new brand's fit before relying on it.

Where threaded wins

  • Larger gauges and heavier ends. At 14g and up, and with heavy or long ends, a threaded connection is more secure. Big-gauge barbells, circular barbells and curved barbells are threaded for this reason.
  • Oral piercings. Tongue and lip jewelry gets bitten, pushed and played with. Threads resist that better than a friction fit. Many piercers will not use press fit in the mouth.
  • Long-term wear with no changes. If the jewelry is going in and staying in, a threaded end has one less way to work loose.
  • Consistency across the healing period. A client who cannot easily remove an end is a client who leaves their initial jewelry alone.

Thread sizes and pin sizes: the detail that causes returns

Most compatibility problems come from mismatched dimensions, not from the system itself.

For threaded jewelry, the thread size is separate from the post gauge. Our threaded posts and ends are listed with their thread size on every product: 16g (1.2mm) on 14g and 16g jewelry, and 20g (0.9mm) or 21g (0.8mm) on the finer pieces. An end with the wrong thread will not seat, and forcing it strips the threads. Check the thread size, not just the gauge, when you order ends for existing stock.

For press fit, the pin diameter is standardized across the common gauges, and the pin length matters less than the bend. When a top will not stay in, the pin usually needs a slightly larger bend. When it will not go in, the bend is too sharp.

How to stock both without doubling inventory

The studios that run both systems well tend to follow the same pattern.

  1. Pick a default per placement, not per studio. Press fit for nostril, ear cartilage and lobe work at 16g and 18g. Threaded for tongue, lip, nipple, navel and anything at 14g and up. Write it down so every piercer orders the same way.
  2. Stock posts deep, ends wide. Posts are the cheap, boring part and the part you run out of. Carry a full length run of labret posts in both connections in your core gauges. Then let the ends carry the variety.
  3. Keep plain ends in both systems. A 3mm and 4mm ball or disc in press fit and threaded covers most healing piercings and most downsizes. Decorative ends can lean toward whichever system your walk-in customers change most, which is usually press fit.
  4. Standardize your threaded thread size. If everything in your 14g and 16g threaded drawer uses 16g (1.2mm) threads, ends become interchangeable across labrets, barbells and curves.
  5. Label the drawer by connection, then gauge. Most mix-ups happen when press fit and threaded tops of the same size sit in the same tray.
